School Holiday Break
We wish the whole of the PHES family a well-deserved break.
Zaan from Pikkewyntjies / Penguinkidz Pre-School has done it again!
For a very long time now, Zaan has been wanting to create a space for kids who have left Pikkewyntjies for school but have nowhere quiet to go in the afternoons to do their homework and have no access to the internet. These kids also don't always get anything to eat after school. When they have done their homework, it is just as important to keep them happily occupied as there are bad influences in the village such as adults only too ready to offer kids substance abuses such as 'tik'.
In preparation for building the wall needed to enclose the stoep, Zaan has challenged the kids to make 'Coke bricks'. To make one, you have to pick up litter and pack it very, very tightly into the empty bottle with the help of a wooden stick, like the handle of a wooden spoon. When it's as full as it can hold, it is amazingly heavy and hard and it can be used to build a decent sheltering wall when put together with the recommended 'podge'.
It's hard work so the two children who bring in the most bricks in a month are taken by Tannie Sandra who is Chairman of the Board to have a milkshake and hamburger at the café in Betty's Bay.
This month's Coke bricks winners are Raymond and Curtis.
