Die Wielhuis was re-launched with its new name in August 2018 by the owner of The Boathouse Restaurant, Irma Kriel.
Irma started this new venture with the aim to help the community. More specifically, to create jobs for single mothers and people whose parents are struggling to get by. Die Wielhuis tries to source all their food as locally as they can and serves some of the freshest fish in town.
Die Wielhuis believes that giving back to the community is just as important as serving up delicious meals. The restaurant sponsors Laerskool Gansbaai with meal vouchers as prizes when they have fundraisers, and raffle draws. They are also proud sponsors of a local soccer team in Masakhane.
Die Wielhuis Soccer Team is about getting children off the streets and keep them busy with something constructive. Many children today fall victim to peer pressure and end up having behavioural problems, or worse. Die Wielhuis wants to make sure that the children are too busy playing soccer to have time or energy to misbehave.
There is only one rule in Die Wielhuis soccer team and that is if you have bad grades, you’re no longer allowed to play.
