A Stoic Tree That Has Stood The Test Of Time
The oldest-known fossil of a pine tree was found in Nova Scotia, Canada and dates back 140 million years, while the oldest recorded specimen lived for approximately 4,800 years.
These evergreen, coniferous and resinous trees are in the genus Pinus, of the family Pinaceae, and are fast-growing softwoods that are native to the northern hemisphere. Although not indigenous to the southern hemisphere, pine trees are durable enough to survive in different habitats and subtropical climates. Most pines grow in acidic, well-drained soil at altitudes of up to 4,000 metres above sea level. The 115 species of pine are divided into three subgenera based on the leave-type, cones, and seeds. Their pollen is also involved in the movement of plant matter between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Some species of the pines are listed as endangered plants due to high exploitation by humans and also their susceptibility to attack by various insects and fungi.
