Wooden Swing Bench for your Garden

Easy Wooden Swing Bench
This bench is low cost and low maintenance, rustic, yet modern, and super easy to build in a day. Let’s get started!
Materials and Tools Required:
38mm x 114mm SA Pine cut to:
• 3 Pieces - 550mm lengths (base struts),
• 3 Pieces - 850mm lengths (backrest struts),
• 2 Pieces - 390mm lengths (armrests),
• 4 Pieces - 670mm lengths (armrests and finishing),
• 5 Pieces - 1 300mm lengths (seat and top backrest slats),
• 1 Piece - 1 220mm length (backrest slat)
50mm x 76mm SA pine cut to:
• 2 Pieces - 1 500mm lengths (support struts)
• 20 each - 6mm x 60mm coach screws
• 50 each - 6mm x 75mm coach screws
• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Tri-square
• Jigsaw
• 80-grit sandpaper
• cordless drill and 4mm drill bit
• 16mm spade bit
• 10mm socket and ratchet
• 4 each - 6mm shackles
• 10 metres of 6mm chain
• 1 x Tin Woodoc varnish
Step 1: Assembling the Frame
For the 3 x Pieces 850mm Backrest Struts:
Measure and mark 76mm and 50mm at the bottom of both ends
Cut out these corner pieces to fit the support struts, with a Jigsaw
On the back of these pieces measure, 200mm and 170mm above this and join the two marks to establish the angle of the backrest.

Step 2: Assembling the Frame
Place 1 of the 550mm pieces backrest on this diagonal line and attach it with 2 x coach screws (6mm x 60mm). Repeat till you have made 3 x of these base-backrest assemblies in total.

Step 3: Assembling the Frame
For the 2 x pieces 1 500mm support struts measure and mark 100mm on each end of the 2 support struts. Attach a base-backrest assembly at each of these marks using 2 x coach screws (6mm x 75mm) per piece. Now screw the 3rd assembly into the centre using 2 x coach screws (6mm x 75mm).

Step 4: The Armrests
Screw a 670mm plank and a 390mm plank at right angles to each other and attach to the left side of the frame with the 6mm x 60mm coach screws. Screw a 670mm plank and a 390mm plank at right angles to each other and attach to the Right side of the frame with the 6mm x 60mm coach screws.
Step 5: The Base and Backrest
For the Seat and Top Backrest Slats - 5 x Pieces 1300mm and 1 x Piece 1220mm
To form the base use 4 of the 1300mm planks.
Use small blocks of wood to evenly space them apart.
Now join these planks with 6mm x 75mm coach screws.
Attach the 5th 1 300mm plank to the backrest at the top with the 1 220mm plank underneath.

Step 6: To Finish Off The Armrests
Place the remaining 2 x 670mm planks on top of the armrest and attach with 6mm x 75mm coach screws. Sand the bench smooth using the 80-grit sandpaper and apply the varnish.

Step 7: You are almost done!
Now you can attach the 6mm chain to the 4 support struts of the bench and hang at a height that suits your comfort. Well Done! Go grab a good book and a cappuccino, you deserve it!
