Our uniquely bountiful waters have provided these majestic predators with a refuge here in Gansbaai. A tenth of the world’s Great White Shark population currently resides in our waters, even though they travel for great distances. We have been able to track a certain mature female that travelled all the way to Australia and back. Still a large group remains in these waters, which is the perfect spot for us to keep an eye on them, for their safety of course.
Individuals from the different companies are personally involved with research projects and associate with the South African White Shark Research Institute. These non-profit programs are dedicated to finding out exactly what make these sharks tick. Tagging projects has allowed for the tracking of these sharks and has led to some amazing discoveries helping us to understand them better.
To ensure the conservation and continued stability of the shark’s environment, the government has put a restriction on the number of cage diving operators that may run in the area.
