On Wednesday 23 June 2015 at about 11:20 a member of Stanford SAPS was visiting a Spaza shop in Melkhout Street, Stanford. After he completed the visit he left the shop. The Police vehicle he was using was parked outside the shop. He approached the vehicle from the passenger side and walked around the vehicle and got in on the driver’s side. He then left the shop and proceeded to another Spaza shop that he wanted to visit. Whilst there members from the community approached him and informed the member that he drove over a child at the previous shop that he visited. The member rushed back to the shop and found a child aged 1 year and 10 months lying in front of the shop next to the road. The child had serious head injuries. He immediately called for help but by the time that medical help arrived the child had unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. At this stage it is unknown how the child landed up under the vehicle of the SAPS vehicle. The mother of the child that was severely shocked by the incident was under the impression that he was sleeping inside the house at the time of the incident.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened and is under investigation by IPID. Anyone with information can contact them directly at their offices.
