Deon Langenhoven, NSRI Hermanus station commander, said: "At 16h51, Thursday, 12th November, NSRI Hermanus duty crew were activated following a report from a man at Voelklip, Klein River Lagoon, concerned for the wellbeing and safety of a man he was observing trying to cross at the Lagoon Mouth during high tide.  The bystander had tried to indicate to the man to cross further away from the lagoon mouth, fearing he would be swept away by currents, but now the man had walked off and disappeared amongst the sand dunes and fears for his safety and wellbeing were increased and the bystander called NSRI Hermanus and raised the alarm. We responded in our sea rescue vehicle and on arrival on the scene our NSRI rescue swimmers were sent across the lagoon - now with the tide going out and through strong  currents - and on the other side of the lagoon mouth, following a brief search through the sand dunes,  a  local  72  year old  man was found sheltering from the wind. He was not injured. The man was guided to the lagoon mouth and our rescue swimmers assisted him across the lagoon without incident and he was checked again and found  to  be fine and he thanked NSRI before driving his car home."
