The very rare Autoimmune disorder, called Myasthenia gravis, is an ‘unseen’ disability where one will never know a person is sick unless being told.
Stephen Bernhardt in Gansbaai, known as a singer and songwriter, has been diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis, which gave him the idea to create an "Awareness" project which will be focusing on the "unseen” Disabilities of the World.
He is also a member of Disabled People South Africa (DPSA).
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease characterized by varying degrees of weakness of the skeletal (voluntary) muscles of the body. It literally means “grave muscle weakness” and most individuals with myasthenia gravis have a normal life expectancy. The sickness is caused by a defect in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles.
Six years ago Stephen wrote a song called "Animosity" to promote a fund raising tool for awareness of his project.
“My song and project has caught the attention of important people, including the DPSA”, Stephen said.
The very famous song writer and producer, Dennis East, has agreed to help Stephen and his song has been recorded on 15 September at Select Music in Tokai, Cape Town.
Werner Botha from Popcorn Films will be shooting the music video in October this year and will feature a mixture of disabled people and top celebrity artists who are helping promote this project.
The release of the song will be in December 2016.
Community Center
The funds will be used to create a community center in the Overstrand dealing with job creation and help for all disabled people. A percentage of funds will be dispersed accordingly which includes a donation to the DPSA. “I see this project as the beginning of a very big project”, Stephen said.
He acknowledge Matt Hurter from Pearly Beach as his mentor and inspiration since 2007. Matt is a Gold Record winner and also President of the Christian Motorcyclists Association of South Africa (CMASA).
An Overstrand fire fighter, Elani Kriel, also is a friend helping Stephen. “Elani speaks for crohn's disease (chronic conditions) and many other autoimmune disorders and who also suffers from an autoimmune disorder”, Stephen said.
“Lets call my project the ‘Animosity Project’ with the fine print ‘awareness for autoimmune and all disabilities’”.
