The law is very clear on mobile phones while driving: you may not hold a cell phone in your hand while driving.
Studies have shown this to be more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol - but does this stop people from answering calls and even texting while behind the wheel?
In the Overstrand region alone you see many drivers - if not most - using their cell phones while driving, despite knowing how dangerous it is!
Be warned: Motorists who are caught using a cell phone without a hands-free kit will be fined!
Traffic officers together with the Special Task team will be conducting co-ordinated operations on various routes around the Overstrand during the forthcoming Easter April holiday, focusing on distracted driving (using cell phones while driving).
The facts and the fine
R1 000 fine for driving and dialling. No driver is permitted to use a hand-held communication device while driving.
This includes a cell phone, microphone or other communication devices, as per the South African National Road Traffic Act.
• You may use such a device ONLY IF IT IS NOT being held in your hand or with any other part of your body (e.g. it may NOT be gripped under your chin either).
• You are also not permitted to use the cellular phone at traffic lights - even when the vehicle is not moving; if the engine is running, you are considered to be driving.
