How Can You Help?
Grootbos Foundation is a non-profit organisation that was established with the vision of conserving the Cape Floral Kingdom and uplifting the communities within it.
Alive Gelem and Onke Dekeni are both Grade 7 learners at Masakhane Primary School in Gansbaai, Overberg. Masakhane is an underserved community which lies alongside the industrial area of Gansbaai and suffers pressures of overcrowding, lack of services, lack of housing, unemployment and minimal future prospects due to lack of colleges, training facilities and employment in this region. Both Alive and Onke live in shacks and attend the no-fee government school, Masakhane Primary, one of eleven primary schools where the Football Foundation delivers free coaching and educational programmes. Neither Alive nor Onke come from families who can afford to cover the costs of this World Cup opportunity.
Alive and Onke have attended Grootbos Foundation soccer coaching and holiday programmes since they were in Grade 1 and their enthusiasm has led to their developing impressive individual skills. Their soccer skills translate well into the Futsal format.
Futsal is similar to 5-a-side indoor football and takes place on a hard surface, usually indoors. Teams consist of five players at a time and there is no limit to the number of times players can be substituted. Futsal is a fast game of speed, stamina and skill, and is growing in popularity in the Western Cape. The Football Foundation is immensely proud of two of our young stars who have been selected by the Federation of Futsal South Africa to represent South Africa for the first time at the AMF C13 Junior Futsal World Cup in Barcelona. This opportunity for them to represent their country is an honour and a thrill, not to mention the possibilities that may develop out of their experience. It will not only inspire Alive and Onke, but also all the young children with whom they live, play and learn.
Thank you for considering our request for assistance to send these two rising stars to the AMF C13 Futsal World Cup.
