Good oral health boils down to good general health. i-MED Africa believes in providing knowledge and education on oral health from an early age, and improving practice of good oral health and prevent diseases and conditions associated. The best ways to prevent oral health problems are through a whole-body approach. Oral health is a very important part of your general health as there’s a strong connection between declining oral health and underlying systemic conditions. The health of your mouth, teeth and gums can affect your entire body. Your mouth is the entry point to your digestive and respiratory tracts, bacteria can spread from your mouth to your bloodstream, causing infections and inflammation in your body. Certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body's resistance to fight infections, making oral health problems more severe.
Your oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions, risks and complications of untreated periodontal disease include:
• tooth abscesses
• migration of your teeth
• pregnancy complications - low birth weight
• exposure of the roots of your teeth
• oral cancer and cancer
• tooth loss
• increased risk of diabetes
• heart disease
• respiratory diseases
If left untreated, an infection from a tooth abscess can spread to other parts of your head or neck. It can even lead to sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is the best way to avoid and prevent oral health complications. But if problems occur, don't wait: The sooner you begin treatment, the better your chances to control diseases and conditions linked to oral health.
