i-MED Africa Mental Health Workshops
At i-MED Africa, we consider it essential to raise awareness of mental health amongst the local people in communities in Masakhane, Stanford and Pearly Beach.
Good nutrition is one of the building blocks of health. Consuming healthy food nourishes the brain and body, and protects people from oxidated stress. We require a healthy diet for resilience of the body, and to be strong and productive. People tend to have different perspectives on gardening. Some may believe it is old-fashioned; while others think that it is only suited to rural areas, and as a result, not as many home gardens or communal gardens are planted and maintained. They often purchase vegetables from expensive supermarkets instead of growing their own organic produce. It has been proven that if properly maintained and proportioned, a garden the size of a door frame can provide a family of four with adequate vegetables all year round.
As i-MED Africa, we consider it absolutely crucial to provide the skills and knowledge required to feed the nation. We have a specialised Agriculture Trainer who presents valuable workshops which are aimed to educate the local communities of Gansbaai about the importance of gardening and eating healthy.
Our communities only have the resources to purchase healthy food on occasion and tend to live on heavily carbohydrate-based foods such as bread and corn pap to keep stomachs full. These foods often produce very little nutrition, and they lack the vitamins, fibre and minerals that are required to keep the body strong and boost the immune system.
As a result, we aim to educate people on different techniques of gardening, while still taking their barriers and challenges into account. We strive to improve food security through the motivation and promotion of active home food gardens. This minimises chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and malnutrition. We encourage them and teach them to use alternatives to keep a food garden productive all year round, and to ensure that they are aware of the benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption, especially for children.
We are an NPO and completely dependent on our donors for the resources we need to achieve our goals.
