Beating the Back-to-School Blues

...these are the feelings of anxiety, grief and sadness we feel when transitioning from the holiday period back into the routine of school term life or office life.

We move from relaxed routines, leisure activities, friends and family meetings, holiday visits and destinations...back to work responsibilities, school assignments, obligations and structured lifestyles. For kids it's leaving behind summer fun, meeting new teachers, moving to a new class or even a new school, not knowing anybody or being separated from groups or friends, and the new workload.

It is something both children and adults suffer from...

Here is a checklist to help your kids beat the back-to-school blues:

 • Go back to usual routines in advance - getting to bed earlier, chores, etc.

 • Make a list of positive aspects of going back to school - seeing friends, meeting new friends, fun school activities... and place these on a magnetic board on your fridge where they can see it.

 • Talk about school anxiety or fears eg. Worrying about new teachers, assigned new classes, new school routine, not knowing where to go between classes and social distance practices of school.

Turn it around and make it into a positive eg. The teacher could be nice and fun, there is a possibility of making new friends, they can meet their old friends during breaktime.

EMPHASIZE THESE.

 • Let kids be part of school preparation eg. Allow them to choose new school supplies, brainstorm lunchbox ideas.

 • Plan fun after school activities eg. Dance classes, music classes, horse riding, art class.

 • Plan fun activities for weekends once the new school term starts.

 • Get a 'back to school surprise... something that they will enjoy wearing or taking with them.

 • Provide emotional support with essential oil rollers. These can be of help to aid focus, improve memory, build confidence, ease anxiety and restore emotional balance.

Mai Co. Kiddies rollers come in a selection of fun coloured glass roller bottles for easy application as well as visual appeal... and an array of beautiful smells and fragrances to lighten the school blues load.
