The Damascene range made by ex-Boekenhoutskloof winemaker Jean Smit are in a league of their own. The fruit is sourced from various vineyards and vinified to show the best expression of the varietal. With allocations tight, we are lucky to have a few on our shelf! Tasting notes are from Christian Eedes of WineMag:

Damascene Semillon 2020: From two Franschhoek vineyards, one planted in 1942 and the other in 1962. Matured in older oak for 11 months. Citrus and peach to the fore on the nose but also hints of blackcurrant, hay and wax. The palate is superbly refined and harmonious – great fruit definition and soft but sufficient acidity before a gently saline finish. So very multi-faceted. CE’s rating: 96/100.

Damascene W.O. Stellenbosch Syrah 2020: Grapes from Bottelary, Devon Valley and Polkadraai Hills. Whole-bunch fermentation ranging from 50 – 100% depending on the batch. The nose is very expressive with notes of red and blackberries, orange peel, some floral perfume, fynbos, charcuterie and white pepper. The palate has a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins before a finish that’s long and dry. Mouth-filling and chewy, this will have a lot of fans. CE’s rating: 96/100.

Damascene W.O. Swartland Syrah 2020: Grapes from three disparate Swartland vineyards. Between 50 and 75% of the fruit was fermented as whole clusters, depending on the parcel. Haunting aromatics with just the right amount of smoky reduction preceding red and blackberries, fynbos and pepper. The palate is exceptionally intense with great purity and drive – excellent fruit definition, a striking line of acidity and tannins that are firm in the best sense. Beautifully realized. CE’s rating: 98/100.

Saturday | Sunday Weekend tasting: It says 'Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz' on the Waverley Hills label, but this Organic and Vegan Friendly blend from Tulbagh is actually 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Shiraz and 4% Merlot. Their tasting notes says: Deep red centre with bright red rim. Plum and rosemary aromas denote its freshness which is rounded off by subtle spicy and fynbos notes. On the palate the wine is full and round, with notes of plums and red spices. The smooth and juicy tannins let the taste of the wine stay in your mouth. Join us to taste this Cab-led blend this weekend!

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
