Each day a group of 35 children between the ages of six and 11 from the rural communities of Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Hangklip, attend the Kidscan! after-school centre. After enjoying a wholesome and nourishing lunch, dedicated staff members and volunteers assist children with their homework tasks. Kidscan! works closely with the Western Cape Government, Help2Read and After School Game Changer.
Kidscan! is made up of a team of proactive and caring members of the community who believe in making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children who deserve every chance at a bright and promising future.
Staff
Principal, Judy May Oncker, is a qualified ECD Level 5 practitioner.
Teacher’s Assistant, Althea Oliver, is a qualified ECD Level 4 practitioner.
Volunteers
Volunteers who are generous with their time and talents, help the children with reading, mathematics, arts, crafts and spiritual guidance. Extramural activities include caring for the environment and all that lives within it.
Kidscan! offers learners who attend the centre, two supervised areas where learners can peacefully concentrate and work on the day’s homework tasks. There is computer access where learners are taught basic computer skills and where they can work on school projects. The play area has a lovely dolls house for the girls and the outdoor playground has a jungle gym which is a big hit with all the children.
The Kidscan! Charity Shop sells unwanted treasures and hand-me-downs that have been donated by the public to bargain hunters and those who love thrift store shopping. The charity shop is located in the Droster Gat Centre in Pringle Bay and is a bountiful trove just waiting to be discovered. Purchase pre-loved clothing, books, kitchen appliances, kitchenware, linen, curtaining, bric-a-brac and even select furniture pieces at a fraction of the cost that you would usually expect to pay.
