Snake season is upon us in the Overberg
Before leaving for a hike, climbing, mountain biking or camping trip, find out where the nearest medical facility is and note the telephone number. In the case of a snakebite, get the patient to a medical facility as soon as possible. Phone ahead to notify them of the arrival of a snakebite victim. Note that, in most cases, you have a couple of hours before serious life-threatening symptoms manifest themselves. Immobilise the patient if possible.”
This message was recently conveyed by the spokesperson of the special unit at the Tygerberg Hospital where they often have to deal with snakebites and similar emergencies, to all residents who might be planning outings or hiking trips in the veld this summer. In rural towns in Cape Agulhas, snakes are already beginning to wake up after the long cold winter sleep and local snake catchers have been called out to assist on several occasions. Do be vigilant and take note of the modus operandi when you do find yourself in a position in which you are either the victim of snakebite or the person in charge of a victim - waiting for help to arrive. At all times remain calm, cool and collected and set the victim at ease. Do not intervene or apply a tourniquet.
